In G-mail is that not possible, as far I know only as an attached file. In Outlook Express you can choice for the option 'Insert' (in the menu) and than choice for a 'picture'. Hopes this helps you.

I think we solved that problem -- it's possible now with Nina having Thunderbird & Gmail is set up as a pop account.

But hey - can anyone help Nina export her address book from Gmail into Thunderbird.

Heeeeeeeeidddiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii? are you home yet?

She'll be home on Firday.

Firefox/Thunderbird user here too. Sooo much easier than Outlook.
I have my gmail set up right in there too.
The neat thing about pictures is you can insert a huge file, then change the size of it by clicking on dimensions and you can enter a custom size to fit the email. No hassle of resizing. Nice!

Oh, i may have to actually finish loading all of my accounts in thunderbird. I currently check 5 seperate email addresses on a daily basis, this would make it so much easier.

umm yes -- I can post the links - there are essentially two

1) to install Thunderbird (and you really should be using Firefox for a browser)
2) and to change Gmail into a pop account - meaning that Thunderbird (the email client) reads it and when it's sent out - it appears to be sent from Gmail too. (if you have Yahoo - you can pay to do the same - but I chose to not send them money...... no way).

If anyone needs gmail invites - I have many.

Thank goodness that Hello keeps chat logs! I'll toss up the links later & the little 'fixes' that I have to have.

Last night we set up Nina's (in German much less) & Maggie's

The profiles would line up on the left side - like in a file tree. You could check each one easily - piece o cake.

ok here goes:

Firefox is the newest version of Netscape. It is superior to IE because the developers have kept moving forward - some feel that microsoft hasn't kept Explorer up to speed. There are threads on Firefox at DST if you want to read about it. It's another option for a browser.

Thunderbird is the email client - meaning you need an email service & this reads it. It allows you to have multiple accounts (more than one email address). If you use Outlook Express or Outlook - you may want to consider which will be the default.

To download one or both (they are easy to dl & set up) - go to: http://www.mozilla.org/products/

Once you dl Thunderbird - then you need to set up your Gmail as POP mail (so Thunderbird can access it) - http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13285
(make sure you do #1)

That should only take about 15 min's. Then there are 2 things left to do - and these are preferences, but...
1) in Thunderbird - go to Tools | Account Settings
Composition & Addressing -- change the pull down to: 'Start my reply ABOVE the quote' (and everyone receiving your replies will thank you - can you tell how I feel about this? lol)

2) in Gmail - if you find the webmail funky - turn off the 'snippets' by going to mail.google.com --- log in

Settings - turn snippets OFF (that made me crazy too)

if you want to transfer all of your mail over into your Thunderbird - then in Gmail's web -- under Settings -- forwarding & pop -- look at #1 & make a choice. Although beware - I did this last night & yuck - ended up downloading a pile of messages. that I really wish I hadn't - because yuck... But it does work.

To transfer your address book - go to your email address & export, then import into Thunderbird. It worked easily from Yahoo.

Hope that helps.

Since Connie is yet again telling people to try things, I will jump in. I have been using Mozilla's products (Thunderbird, Firefox, Netscape, etc....) for many years.

Thunderbird is an awesome email program that does everything that I require. I currently have 6 email accounts (from different providers) set up that it handles. You can set filters to sort mail, junk filters, etc.... I have to troubleshoot my in-laws microsoft outlook email periodically and I hate that program but they won't convert.

Firefox is a great browser. It is fast, highly customizable browser. Want to hear a funny story: I know this person that interviewed at Microsoft in the department that develops Internet Explorer. The interviewee saw that Microsoft interviewer was using Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer and asked why the interviewer wasn't using their own product. The interviewer replied that Firefox was superior and until Internet Explorer caught up he wasn't going to use it.

With that said, there is a lot of help faq's for Thunderbird and Firefox at mozilla.com. Mail can be transferred, bookmarks can be imported, etc.....

one of the things I really like about Firefix is the extensions. They have a great one called session saver. it automatically recovers your opened tabs if your computer locks up or you close a window by accident.
I also love the tabbed browsing, very easy and convenient to use.

Thank you Connie, she set me up with Thunderbird and it's working. I have the same question as Nina on how to insert the pic inside the mail in Thunderbird?
Thanks

In Thunderbird, I just go copy the image that I want in my message and then go to my thunderbird compose message and paste it in. ie. your typical Ctrl-c (copy image), Ctrl-V (paste image) and it should work. It shouldn't be sent as an attachment then..... I just sent sis a message so she will reply soon to test it.

When you have a message open that you're writing in - look on the far right & you'll see the smiley face (drop down menu) - click on the drop down to the left of it --

And you'll see the options to add a Link, and the third option is 'Image'.

Select image & paste in your link. Send me an email to test it out! :)

Setting up your aol account is similar to the gmail. Just different settings. Here is the info:
http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/faq#aol

And you'll see the options to add a Link, and the third option is 'Image'.

Select image & paste in your link.

This options works but I think copy & paste is easier if you already have the image open.

And if you are looking for a calendar software. I use Mozilla's Sunbird calendar. I don't have a palm or anything so I needed something. Sunbird's advantage is it is more powerful than google's calendar but Google's calendar is easy to share with others and Sunbird doesn't have this feature.

Here's how to set up a signature in Thunderbird - & you can do one for each email acct (& they can be different).

And I realized something else...... you can drag messages from one email addy to another & put them into folders..... weird eh?
