Okay, so I feel like a dork  , but I think I am making more work for myself when I use templates. What is the best way to use them? There must be something I'm missing. How do I get my paper and stuff in the right spots?

Thanks!

Holly Mccaig just gave me some great tips on how to use them.
You drag the papers over the template then do cntrl+g to get them to clip onto the template.

I am using PSE4 and when I open the template, I place a paper over the layer I want to cover. The hit control+G and it will "crop" to fit your layer. Hope this helps!

Another way to do it in PSE 3 & 4 is to drop your paper over the layer you want to cover. Then hold down the ALT key and hover your mouse between the two layers and a little symbol pops up, and just click it.

edited to change ctrl key to alt key - EEEP!

Sarah Jane

Hope this helps (it's how to use it with Photoshop, but it should work with elements....

1) open up Photoshop Elements.

2) Open up the template you want to use.

3) Make sure the tool bar that displays the layers is open. You'll use this ton. The other one I use the most is history. With this one, you can back up, to "fix" mistakes....

4) When you have your template open, save it with a working title (save as, say "snow_page" or something else. You'll save it as a psd file (photoshop file).

5) Decide what kit/paper/elements you are going to use with the page. The instructions will be the same from here on, until you decided to save the finished project.

6) To add paper/elements, etc.
Open up the desired file. Have it open side by side in your photoshop workspace with your template.

7) Make sure you have the "arrow" selected.

8) Click on the layer you want to change first...Say you want to change a photo mat, copy or drag it to the paper you want to use.

9) Make sure you can see the layers on the "element" or "paper" You should see the "original" paper and the "new" layer you just created.

10) Hold down the "Ctrl" button and with your mouse arrow "click" in the center of the layer's picture...looking at the layer list, it's the "square" next to the words.

11) This selects the "photo mat" layer. (or what ever layer you are copying.)

12) Now, use your mouse and select the layer you want to copy. In this case, the paper you are turning into the photo mat. This adds what you copied to the "clipboard."

13) Now, select the template page. Click "Ctrl" "V", this pastes what you just copied on your template. Move it into place where you want it to be. You should have two sets of this layer - the original, and your copy. Delete the "original" "photo mat." (The layer you used to make your copy), and now, you'll only have one version of this layer--the one with the pretty paper.

14) Repeat these steps until you have all the papers/elements on the page the way you want them to be.

15) you can ad photos this way, or you can simply open the photo up, and with the arrow key, click on them and drag them to the template. Then you can size them to your desired shape, etc.

Does this help, or does this just make it more confusing?

E-mail me your questions, and I'll try to help.

I'll be back on line on Saturday mid-day.

Carrie, did you ever get this to work? If not, post again and I'll try to help. I had a terrible time catching on to this, but once you get it, it's wonderful!
