Hi ladies!

I need your help big time...
What categories do you use to organize your digital stuff (scrapbook and picstures).
I have everthing in designer name folders and again on my external by elements...papers...word art.
Some people mentioned they organize by color over at DST..

Could use help...I am going to get the acdsee programs as soon as they are offered here at oscraps...next couple of days and I want to spend one WHOLE day organizing myself but don't want to have to redo it down the road...

Please give me your tips...suggestions!
Any help is much appreciated!
Hugs!

I emailed this to you Sue, because there are some screenshots in it.

Here is what my sister compiled:

How to Categorize quickly and efficiently:

Tips on creating categories:
Open acdsee - and you'll see the tree like in Windows explorer.
Rt click on an image & properties
Create new categories by rt click on category & new category
-see below & one keyword -- alpha
that will keep you going for awhile
Once you have those categories created, then click on the item & put x's in the boxes of categories that apply

I played with ACDSee a while before I decided on the way to categorize my digital library.

Here is my suggestion on categorizing and using keywords:

I basically created a few main categories and many subdirectories:

* My Main Categories:
* My Digital Layouts (my working area)
* My Favorites (this is for images (i.e. corkboard) that I know I will use many times. ACDSee also has a feature to tag those Favorite Kits.)
* My Photos (all my personal photos)
* Previews
* Subjects
* Types (what everything is paper, hardware, etc.)
* Color

* Designer: I put in the author box. If you put the designer name here, it allows incredibly easier searches later.
* Kit Name: I put in the caption box.

*Email me for the screen shot that would go here & also for the screenshot of my elements **

The only thing I use for keywords is alpha. I did this because I wanted to "tag" a folder of alphas and you can't use categories to do this.

My opinion is this: Categories provide much easier searches than keywords. I would rather just point and click to search, than type or use the search panel. If I have a directory of something (like alphas and I only want to see a few of them) than I keyword. I currently have only found that I have this need for alphas.

How I do this easily & quickly:

* I first select the kit's directory and enter in the designer and kit name automatically for everything in that kit. I am in the process of creating directions to do this but they are in a rough draft. If you want to know immediately, pm me, and I can get you in the rough draft. This step can easily be done before or after you categorize the kit. Note see doc: Easily Add Kit Name and Designer
* I then select my preview or multiple previews. categorize it as a "Preview" and select the appropriate Subject and Colors. My thoughts on this is: when designing I want to go find a particular kit, like a patriotric kit. What I really want is all the previews of my patriotic kits not all the elements that look patriotric. This is my preference and how I work.
* I then start selecting the elements in my kit and assigning the types of elements. I do not assign any elements in a kit to a subject. For speed, I am not categorizing color of elements either. This can be done at anytime and if I feel the need I will do it later. Again, usually if I want a specific color, I will go look for the previews of kits with those colors.
* When I encounter alpha's they are usually in a separate folder and I tag the folder with the alpha keyword. If there are grouped together in one image, I tag the image as a keyword.

Here are two tips to speed things up while categorizing:

* My thumbnails are usually small so I can select as many as I can and then click on the appropriate categories. If I can't tell what something looks like, I hold the the ctrl key and roll the wheel on my mouse. The thumbnails go smaller and larger quickly. I roll into what I want see closely, make a decision, roll back out. Try it, it is really cool feature.
* Sometimes if I have a lot of things to categorize in a directory, I start getting lost in what I have categorized or have not categorized. I go up above my thumbnails, and choose Filter by -> Uncategorized. This will only show me the what has not been categorized. If I want to do this again in the same group of thumbnails, I go back choose Filter by-> All and immediately go back and choose Filter by -> Uncategorized again. If you do this, remember to change your Filter back when you are done, otherwise it appears all your categorized stuff has disappeared. It really hasn't, the software is just filtering what you see.

I decided that I am getting this. Ya know what? $40 at this point in my life isn't going to make me or break me. I am already broke-en. I have been busting my a** to pay the bills, so don't you think I should just break down and get this?

Yup, me too.

I haven't used this program, but in digitalscraproom I have folders for fasteners, alphas, all my kits, flowers, stitching... papers are the only thing I sortof organize by color. I have a folder for earth tones, darks, jewel tones, brights, earth tones etc. I'm always changing their colors a bit, so I didn't want to limit what I might want to use.

I'm lost or maybe I need to be convinced-how is this different from what I am doing in Windows. :?:

All the descriptions, etc. is what I am currently doing in Windows. So I am really seriously on the fence :oops:

Jeannie,

I am guessing that how you are arranging in windows is this: you get your kits and arrange them by designer or types of things. But basically you are rearranging the files so you can find them.

What I see ACDSee Photomanager doing for me is this:

I can easily see what I have (without organizing anything) since it has feel of windows explorers. (Directories on the left and thumbnails of my files on the right.)

If you start categorizing/organizing. You can easily go searching for what you want and the results are the thumbnails of what it finds. i.e. I want all my Shabby Princess kits, so I click on Shabby Princess & on previews and I see all Shabby Princess Previews. If I only clicked on Shabby Princess then I would get all of your stuff.

In addition it has many nice features:
resizing to post your layouts is easy
archiving your digital kits is easy
you can catalog a CD/DVD and even if the CD/DVD isn't in your computer you can still see the thumbnails of your images.

And I am still finding more as I play with it.

Heidi where can I see more screen shots of this product features you are describing and are the previews any bigger in this program than they are in Windows?

Not sure about the screen shots, but you can make the thumbnail previews any size you want by just moving a little slider bar at the top of page. Also every item can have multiple categories, unlike windows, where you would have to actually copy the item to find it in two places. So I have papers many things in a lot of different categories. Hope that makes sense and doesn't confuse you.

Ronee, no that didn't confuse me. You were very clear :) .
What I meant by screenshots are some kind of examples of what has been done by digi-scrappers using this. :D
