need advice page 1

Hi,
I just posted a layout that I need help with.
http://www.oscraps.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=173&cat=500&ppuser=292

Here are my questions:
1) should I make the paintbrushes less opaque (they're @ 100% now)
2) are there better places for the brushes? less, more?
3) how's the color?

Ok - I'm not looking for love - just constructive criticism. Be honest please!

But I must say I am SO stoked to be able to 'paint' on my layouts! I saw a layout last night & was so inspired I went & bought the brushes & played today. Bear with me now - (or quit reading... 8) ) - but I would NEVER put paint on my photos! But this is cool & I like seeing layouts with it done. These photos had a lot of boring space in those spots & needed a bit of jazz (in my opinion).

What are your thoughts?

I'm working with Paint Shop Pro 7 & it's a learning curve (gads - I'm 40 too  ) Anyway, I have one last question.

Can someone tell me how to fill that brush in using the bucket. At the moment I'm copying & pasting from paper. It works, but what if I want a particular color (& I would like to use the eyedropper). Thanks to anyone that can give me instructions!

Anyway - I am SOOOOOO excited about my new toys! oh man there were sales! I spread the financial love around last night.

I look forward to hearing from someone...
Thanks!

Great layout! I love the bubbles! We have a labrador that loves to play with water just like that LOL.

I think you could play with the opacity a bit on the area you painted. Have you got a drop shaddow on the paint? You could try making that a lot smaller or leaving it off all together. Try making the drop shaddows on the pics a little lighter and smaller too - it will make them appear closer to the page.

what a fun lo! I agree, i'd play w/ your drop shadows, so the pics dont look like they are hovering over the paper. The paint brushes look cool, you could play w/ the opacity, but i still think they look good! :)

Yep, yep, I agree with CaroB and Lauren! Super cute photos and layout! I wanna play with your doggies :)

Now, on to the CC:

Dropshadows on pictures:
Definately drop the size of the dropshadows on the pictures. You want them to look like they are just barely above the paper - sitting on the paper. Take a picture and lay it on top of a piece of paper in real life and see that the edge is just barely darker. Thicker elements, like your brads and photo anchors - or flowers, etc., will have larger drop shadows because they would cast a bigger shadow in real life. Does that make sense?

Paint:
I'd try taking the dropshadow off the paint first and see if that makes the paint look more 'real'. If not, then I'd turn the opacity down. I like the placement and color of them though!

I don't know anything about Paint Shop Pro, but is there a way to make an actual brush from an image in it? I think you would have better luck changing the color of the paint strokes that way rather than using the paint bucket. The paint bucket works great for flood fills (all over color) but not so great on anything with any detail. It tends to mess up the edges making them all jaggedy and yucky. (how's that for a technical description lol).

Maybe one of our members who uses PSP can give you some more advice on that!

Make sure the brush is no bigger than 250 pixels wide. Make sure the tool options palate is open. Use the magic wand to select your image. Once it is selected on your tool options pallet click the paint brush icon(make sure it isn't the tool pallet to do so right click and you will have a list tool options is a square that has a blue line). You will have a list drop down, click on custom. A new window will pop up click on create. That is pretty much it. You brush should now be what you just created. It has been a while since I used 7 but that should work :)
