Can I tell you how long it took me to figure out how to put a paper clip on a lo? After 10 minutes of trying, I gave up, got a piece of paper and a clip out and sat there at my desk and copied what it looked like in my hands onto my computer.
I am unreal!
Are there any tricks out there to help you get the right look and the right pieces and parts erased and layered?

Hi Sue:
Here's what I usually do. I put the clip on top of the paper and have the second part jut out a bit.
I apply shadows first .
I select the paper clip until the marching ants are showing and Erase the part that is showing while it is still selected so I don't erase the part I want.
The reason you apply shadows first is to make it look as realistic as possible to me.

I always just zoom in really, really close and use the block eraser.

OH, OH, OH! I just realized tonight that I do something similar to what Maggie does...
I select the paperclip as my active layer,
then
Ctrl Click the icon of the paper layer (or whatever you are clipping onto) to select that item with the marching ants (that way I get exactly to the edge of the item without erasing extra bits of my paperclip)
then
I zoom in and erase the part I don't want of the paperclip
I bet that is just about as clear as mud - I'm gonna just have to do a tutorial some day....

Chris - I have to use the real one to look at too.
One trick that I use - is after I've adjusted an element - or cut it out of a png sheet - I save it back into that folder with a name like -
- paperclip erased
- buckle erased
or if I use a certain paper & cut a template out of it - I save as ....paper circle.
That way - in the future I don't have to redo it again. Just a thought! (another librarian thang)

I just decide whether I want the short bit showing or the long bit, and get rid of whichever I don't want.
Is it more complicated than that? Am I missing something? Perhaps I don't think about it enough... ??
